Whiten Teeth Naturally Overview

Teeth whitening is generally used to whiten and lighten stained and dirty teeth.

Staining can be caused by a number of things. Tea, coffee and alcohol as well as bad

oral hygiene, excessive fluoride consumption and some medications.

Despite all the products and procedures available commercially to whiten teeth, you

can actually get good results with natural teeth whitening.

The most common ways to whiten teeth naturally are:

Fruit

Rubbing lemons and strawberries on your teeth. Lemons and strawberries contain

natural bleaching agents as well as sugar. You should only use these products

sparingly as they can be too strong and cause damage to your teeth.

Baking Soda

Baking soda mixed into a paste with water or glycerine is also used to whiten teeth.

baking soda is used in many commercial toothpastes as a whitening agent so it has

some merit. However when used at home you must be careful not to use too often or

brush too firmly with the baking soda because it can be very abrasive and actually

rub away your enamel.

If you are going to try to whiten your teeth naturally your should follow some simple

oral care habits to get the best results.

Drink lots of water.

Drinking water helps to wash food and bacteria that may cause

staining away from the teeth. As well as keeping you hydrated this is another

important point of drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Brush you teeth.

You should brush your teeth gently at least twice a day to keep them

looking white and bright. If you can use a natural or organic toothpaste as this will

complement your natural teeth whitening regime.

Avoid Drinks That Stain

You should avoid tea, coffee and alcohol as these are the main culprits for tooth

staining. By stopping or cutting down on these drinks that cause staining you are

getting a great head start on getting and keeping whiter teeth.

Stop Smoking

If you are a smoker you should stop. You will never get white teeth if you continue

to smoke and it will be better for your health as well. Chewing tobacco is also a

major cause of dark yellowed teeth and should be avoided.

It is definitely worthwhile trying to whiten teeth naturally before you visit the

chemist or dentist. Natural teeth whitening is much more cost effective and there are

little to no side effects. If you know the best products to use to whiten your teeth

naturally then you can get very good results.

Natural Teeth Whiteners You May Not Have Heard Of

Little Known Natural Teeth Whitening Methods

As well as the more common natural teeth whiteners such as using lemons, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide there are quite a few other methods available to you. In this article you will discover what they are, how they work and where you can obtain them.

Babul
The Babul tree is found in India and its twigs have been used since ancient Ayurveda times to brush and whiten the teeth. Babul contains tannin which is what works to make your teeth whiter.

Neem
The twigs of the Neem tree are also used to whiten and brush your teeth. Neem oil is an astringent and antiseptic so it removes bacteria and the brushing action is abrasive. As Neem twigs are hard to find in the western world you may be better off using a natural toothpaste that contains Neem oil or just purchasing some Neem oil. You can find Neem oil/ toothpaste online or at good health food stores.

Banyan
Banyan roots are also used as tooth brushes and are known to whiten teeth through their astringent qualities.

Holy Basil
Holy Basil known and revered in India as Tulsi can help to whiten your teeth. Dried Holy Basil leaves can be powered and rubbed onto the teeth for effective teeth whitening. Holy Basil is good for your teeth because of its antibacterial, anti fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. You can buy a pot plant of Holy Basil to put on your patio. It tastes vaguely of cloves unlike the Thai basil or Italian basil you may be used to.

Recipes

Here are two little known recipes for whitening your teeth according to ayurvedic principals.

Mix salt with dried rind of lime. Rub this onto your teeth and rinse off.

Grind 50 gms of keekar wood, roasted alum 20 gms and namak lahori 10 gms to make a powde. Mix with a little water and rub over your teeth.

Whatever method you use to whiten your teeth you should investigate these less common natural teeth whitening methods as they are less harmful and less abrasive to your teeth than some of the more common natural teeth whitening remedies.

3 Of The Best Tooth Whitening Methods

In order to get a whiter brighter smile and a healthier mouth you need to use the best tooth whitening products available. The best tooth whitening products are easy to use, inexpensive and get great results. There are several options available to you. Teeth whitening strips, a session in the dentists chair or some natural methods. In the below article you will find out what to look for in teeth whitening that gets results.

The Dentist Chair.
If you are looking for something quick and easy that gets results fast you may like to consider gettting your teeth professionally whitened by a dental professional. However this procedure does not come without its price. This technique of getting white teeth can be very expensive. Expect to pay anything from $500. The results will be seen immediatly after however you will neeed to take care of your teeth and return visits will be required. There is also the pain factor. Getting teeth whitened professionally involves a high percentage whitning gel to be applied to your teeth. The percentage of peroxide in this procedure is what gives quick results but muist be closely monitored by a qualified practitioner. The gel is then activated by light or heat. This puts the formula to work quicker anf more effectivly however the extreme conditions put strain and damge onto your teeth and gums.  people who have had their teeth professionally whitened have reported feeling sensitivity in the teeth for years after the procedure. While the procedure is being done it is likly you will feel quite a bit of pain. This happens when the laser passes over an exposed nerve or part of tooth where the enamel is thin.

Teeth Whitening Strips
This product was designed for ease of use and safety when whitening your teeth at home. Unfortunately not everyone’s mouth is the same size so there can be some hiccups when using strips. Teeth whitening strips have a pre applied whitening agent applied onto a lower and upper shaped mouth strip. You stick these onto your teeth, wait 30 minutes and after a period of two weeks you should have whiter teeth. The downside to these is incorrectly fitting strips can let whitening agent leak out onto your gums causing irritation.  Teeth whitening strips are widely available with costs ranging from $20 to $50. The strips can be time consuming to use and need to be used consecutively for two weeks to obtain the best results.

Natural Teeth Whitening Methods
Most natural teeth whitening methods can be quite damaging to your teeth unless you know exactly how to use them. Highly abrasive and acidic products can lead to enamel erosion and irritated gums.  The best natural tooth whitening that you can use is hydrogen peroxide.  Hydrogen peroxide can be an inexpensive and effective way of whitening your teeth.  However you need to use the right dilution and formula of hydrogen peroxide.  Most common brands of hydrogen peroxide include other chemicals which can be damaging to your teeth.  You need to use pure hydrogen peroxide at a dilution of no more than 3%.  This will effectively whiten your teeth but should not be used more than several times per week.

Home Tooth Whitening Explored

If you have stained or discolored teeth you may like to consider home teeth whitening.  Home teeth whitening has the advantage of being inexpensive and relatively easy to use. There are several different methods that you can try to whiten your teeth at home.  Most methods fall into one of two categories.  Home teeth whitening kits or natural techniques to whiten teeth.

Home Teeth Whitening Kit
With both categories of teeth whitening you need to know what the dangers are of whitening your teeth at home.  If you choose to buy a home teeth whitening kit you have to be careful that you apply it exactly as the instructions suggest.  A common problem that may occur when using a home teeth whitening kit is insufficient application of the product resulting in patchy results.  This occurs when the whitening gel is not applied evenly to the teeth.  Another reason why you may end up with blotchy white patches is because you do not allow the gel to dry completely on the teeth which means the saliva in your mouth washes off some of the whitening agent.

The second problem that occurs with home teeth whitening kits is increased sensitivity and irritated gums.  The whitening agent used in most teeth whitening kits is carbamide peroxide.  When this chemical comes into contact with your gums it will cause irritation as it is not supposed to touch your gums.  Another cause of increased sensitivity is leaving the teeth whitening agent on your teeth for too long.  One thing you need to be careful of when you buy a home tooth whitening kit is how high the percentage of peroxide is in the product. The higher the percentage the greater the risk of sensitivity and irritation.

Natural Teeth Whitening
Another way that you can whiten your teeth at home is to use natural methods. Natural methods are not without their own risks. Many people think that just because a technique is natural it is completely safe. This is not the case with tooth whitening. Many techniques that can be read about online involves the application of highly acidic fruits which with increased and consistent use errode the enamel of your teeth.  Other methods involve the use of hydrogen peroxide or baking soda.  Both  are safe in small doses but if used incorrectly or too often can result in irritated gums and damaged tooth enamel.  You must make sure that you do your research before whitening your teeth yourself and make sure you follow all instructions.

How To Whiten My Teeth

White teeth can greatly enhance and improve your appearance and self-confidence.  Unfortunately with so many options available how do you know what really works and what the dangers of teeth whitening are.  In the article below we take a brief look at the main methods that can be used to whiten your teeth.

At Home Methods
Teeth whitening toothpaste is a fairly expensive and a relatively ineffective method to whiten your teeth at home.  Some people may report a slight whitening of teeth but most experts agree that teeth whitening toothpaste is no better than ordinary toothpaste.  Teeth whitening toothpaste generally makes people’s teeth more sensitive.

Teeth whitening gel is another option.  To use teeth whitening gel you generally apply the gel directly onto the tooth using a pen or brush.  You need to be  careful to avoid the gumline as the gel will cause irritation to your soft tissue.  One of the main problems with teeth whitening gel is that it generally is applied incorrectly and washes off when saliva mixes with the product.  Most people end up with irritated gums and splotchy results.

Teeth whitening strips are another way of using whitening gel.  The strips are brought with the whitening gel pre-applied to them for ease of use and application.  However all mouths are not created equal and most strips will fit incorrectly causing leakage of the whitening agent on to the gumline.

At The Dentist
Laser teeth whitening is probably the most effective form of whitening your teeth.  However it does not come without its negatives.  First of all the pain you will feel when you get your teeth professionally whitened is high and sensitivity and pain will remain for several days to weeks later.  The results are not permanent either and you will need to return for further treatments.  Secondly the cost of laser tooth whitening makes it fairly inaccessible for most people.  Costs begin from around $300 to up ward of $1000.  As with anything in life you get what you pay for.  The cheaper options of laser teeth whitening may not be given by a qualified operator which can and has caused extreme damage and pain to many people.

Take home teeth whitening kits. Many dentists provide take-home tooth whitening kits to their patients for quite a high fee.  The dentist will generally take a mold of your teeth to take home for use when applying the whitening product. These kits usually contain a higher percent of whitening agent and if used incorrectly can cause damage to the teeth.

Natural Teeth Whitening Methods
The Internet is abound with natural methods to whiten your teeth.  However many of these are not very effective and can actually be damaging to your teeth.  The most common methods for whitening teeth naturally are using natural foods such as strawberries or lemons.  With this method you generally apply and rub the fruit directly onto your teeth.  Strawberries and lemons are highly acidic and can cause permanent damage to your tooth enamel.

Baking soda is another common method for natural teeth whitening at home.  The problem with baking soda is, in its pure form it can actually be too abrasive for your teeth.  People tend to overuse it and brush their teeth too forcefully which causes the enamel to be rubbed off the teeth.

Lastly, hydrogen peroxide is also used a lot at home.  The problem with hydrogen peroxide is the formula that most people use on their teeth contains other chemicals.  These other chemicals can cause problems to your teeth.  If you buy the correct formulation of hydrogen peroxide, that is pure hydrogen peroxide which you then dilute and mix yourself you must make sure that you dilute it to a 3% mix.  If you use a higher concentration you can seriously damage your teeth as anything higher than a 3% solution has been proven to destroy teeth enamel and gum tissue.

Natural Teeth Whitening – What Are The Options?

There are many ways to whiten your teeth naturally at home.  All of them have their own pros and cons and it is important to be aware of both.  Not all natural methods of whitening your teeth are safe to use.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of the most common ways of natural teeth whitening at home.  It is a common ingredient usually found in most household pantries.  It is generally used by forming a paste that is comprised of baking soda and water, or baking soda and glycerin.  This paste is then brushed onto the teeth as you would regular toothpaste.  The problem with this method of whitening your teeth is that if you use baking soda too often or brush your teeth to vigorously you can actually cause the enamel to be brushed away from your teeth.  In short baking soda is safe to use on your teeth but you must not overuse it.  It may whiten your teeth slightly by brushing away shallow surface stains.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is another common way to whiten your teeth at home.  However it too is generally misused.  The common hydrogen peroxide that you may buy from a drugstore or supermarket is usually a 3% dilation which is fine for internal use however it does contain extra chemicals which can be bad for your teeth.  If you would like to try to whiten your teeth with hydrogen peroxide you should use pure hydrogen peroxide and dilute that down to a 3% mix.  Any makes higher than 3% is very damaging to your tooth enamel and the soft tissue in your mouth.  Pure hydrogen peroxide may be hard to find and can be a little pricey. Hydrogen peroxide if used every day can cause a heightened sensitivity in your teeth.

Lemons
Lemon juice and lemon peel have been used to whiten your teeth.  Generally, using lemon juice will  just cause a slight lessening of yellowed teeth.  Using lemon juice on everyday basic can be very damaging to your tooth enamel.  This is because lemon is highly acidic and will irritate your soft tissue and break down tooth enamel. It is not advised to use lemon juice to whiten your teeth.

Strawberries
Strawberries are also highly acidic and they are also high in sugar.  Because of their abrasive nature they can also be damaging to tooth enamel if used too frequently.  Most people will find strawberries too irritating to their teeth and gums and it is not suggested to use this method often.  If you do choose to use this method make sure you do not leave the strawberries on your teeth for too long because of their high sugar content.  Strawberries may also be expensive and hard to obtain in some areas.

Wood Ash
Some people use wood ash for natural teeth whitening.  This is because it contains potassium hydroxide which has been shown to whiten teeth.  However you do not want to use this method more than once a month as wood ash can be very abrasive and will wear down your tooth enamel.  Wood ash can be obtained for free.

Overall most of the natural teeth whitening methods known are quite damaging to your teeth and gums.  You must make sure you know exactly how to use these methods to obtain good results.  Because most of these methods cannot be used very often they do not tend to give good results.  Good results can only come from consistent application of a teeth whitening method and all of the above are too damaging to use often enough to create whiter, brighter teeth.
